Creating A Personalised Gift

It’s a very simple process. You do not need any particular design knowledge to be able to personalise any of the products on That’s a promise!

Here’s a quick video explaining the process;

Once you’ve decided which product you’d like to have, you can then click on ‘Customise’ from within the product’s page, which would launch the ‘The Tink Customisation Tool’ – where all the magic happens!

The Customisation tool shows you a preview of how the design for your gift will look like.

The easiest way to start personalising your gift, at the Customisation Tool, is to click on ‘Manage Layers’, located at the top red part of the Customisation Tool, to see which areas of the design can be customised.

Not all the designs allow the same changes to the text.

Some allow all the text within the design to be changed, whilst others only allow specific parts of the text to be modified.

Some designs also allow the text to be scaled up or down, rotated and have it’s position and colour changed. It’s important to always refer to the ‘Manage Layers’ to explore which elements can be modified.

Changing of text is fairly easy, you can type into the layer itself, by selecting the text directly onto the canvas, or into the character panel which pops up at the bottom of the Customisation Tool when a text layer is selected. The tools available on the character panel are more or less those you find in a word processor. These tools are displayed or hidden depending on the permissions allowed for that particular design, as explained above.

Refer to the below image for all the tools explained:

All the tools explained:

Colour Fill
Allows you to change the text colour, either by choosing a colour from the colour picker or by entering the hexadecimal value of the desired coloured.
Here you can also find the ‘Transparency‘ tool.

Allows you to rotate your layer.

Allows you to easily align your layer to either edge of the canvas or the centre of the Y axis and X axis.

This tool also includes a horizontal flip tool and a vertical flip tool, which allows you to mirror your layer.

Use the ‘Center Horizontal’ and ‘Center Vertical’ to be sure that your text is aligned in the centre of the canvas.

Move Up / Move Down
Where applicable, this tool allows you to move your layer up or down amongst the other layer. When moving the layer ‘up’ it will cover layers below it, and when moving the layer ‘down’ it will be covered by layers which are on top of it.
This is most useful when trying to create superimposed effects.

This will reset the layer to its initial stage (any changes such as rotation, colour, etc, done to the layer will be removed)

Fonts Drop Down
Choose your desired type from here! Tens of options available – and we’re always adding new ones!

Watch out as not all of the fonts available support the Maltese alphabet.

If the font doesn’t support Maltese lettering, it will automatically switch the Maltese letters to the default typeface, as per below:

To input Maltese characters, change your keyboard to Maltese.
If you’re not aware of how to use your keyboard to input Maltese characters, you can copy and paste from here:  ġ Ġ ħ Ħ ż Ż ċ Ċ

Font Size
Here you can set the size of your lettering. You can also change the size of the text by resizing the layer from the bottom right corner handle, directly from the canvas.

Be cautious when setting the text size! Do not go for a small text size as it might not be readable.

Line Spacing
Whenever you have more than 1 lines of text, this tool allows you to increase the spacing between these text lines. By default, it is set to 1.

Letter Spacing
This works similar to the line spacing, but increases the spacing between the characters.

The bold button will make the text layer to look thicker, like this.

The Italics button will make the characters in a text layer to look slanted, like this.

Adds a line underneath the text, to make it look underlined, like this.

Text Justification
Use this tool to align your text in any of these options:

  • left aligned—the text is aligned along the left margin or gutter, also known as left-alignedragged right or ranged left;
  • centered—text is aligned to neither the left nor right margin; there is an even gap on each side of each line.
  • right aligned—the text is aligned along the right margin or gutter, also known as right-alignedragged left or ranged right;
  • justified—text is aligned along the left margin, and letter- and word-spacing is adjusted so that the text falls flush with both margins, also known as fully justified or full justification;

Text transform – This new tool offers 3 option for your text:

  • Capitalize / Mixed — A mixture of upper and lower case characters, depending on your choice, like this: Hello Tinkers, I chose to write in a MIXED style!.
  • Lowercase — Makes all the letters in the selected layer in lowercase, like this: hello tinkers, this line is all in lowercase.
  • Uppercase — Makes all the letters in the selected layer in uppercase, like this: HELLO TINKERS, THIS LINE IS ALL IN CAPS.

Text Stroke
Adds an additional thickness to the outer of the letter. We advise caution when using the stroke tools. Most characters in most typefaces tend to act funny when a stroke of a value of 3 or more is added.

Text Field
You can use this area to add any text, or modify existing text.

We offer 3 options to upload photos for photo personalisation. You can upload photos directly from your library saved on your device, choose a photo from Facebook or one you have on Instagram.

The maximum file size allowed is 10Mb and a maximum resolution of 4000 x 4000 pixels (minimum 72dpi)

The allowed image types are Jpeg, Png and SVG

Once you’ve chosen the desired photo, you are asked to confirm that you hold the rights to use that particular image. For more details about this, kindly refer to Clause 19 in our terms and conditions.

Once uploaded, you can change the transform properties (scale, rotate, position) of your photo to fit it as nicely as possible within the designated photo area.

Another tool you can use to tweak your photos is the ‘Advanced Editing’ feature, where you can custom crop your photo, apply filters to your photo, and manipulate colours with the brightness and contrast controls.

A useful function is the ‘Remove White’ tool, which as the name suggests, removes the white from your picture – this is most useful when you are using either silhouettes or one colour logos saved with a white background, to be able to replace the white with a transparent background.

Don’t forget to press ‘Save’ from within the ‘Advanced tool’ environment.
This will update the preview of the gift you are designing.
At any point, you can go back into the ‘Advanced tool’ environment and choose to ‘Restore Original’ which will delete all the changes you’ve done to your photo to it’s original stage.

Create Your Own Design

Event though the idea of ‘Creating Your Own Design’ may sound a bit too complex… in reality, it’s not! You do not need any design knowledge to be able to create a simple design on a tink.

First, choose the tink you want from here.

We’re using the 200×200 wall hanging plaque for this experiment.

Next, hit the ‘Customise‘ button to launch ‘The Tink Customisation Tool

The Toolbar – explained

Manage Layers
This is the place where you can find all the layers in your design. By default, you will only find 1 (one) text layer, which has written ‘Create Your Own Design Here!’ in it.

What are layers?
Design layers are like stacked plastic sheets – you can see the below sheets through the transparent parts of them, but the opaque parts will cover the sheets below them. You can also change the opacity of a layer to make content partially transparent.

Each image, text or graphics element from our libraries is added to a new layer.
The positioning and order of these layers changed from the ‘Manage Layers’ tab by dragging and dropping the layers.

Add Image
You can use this tab to upload your favourite photo into your design.

If you have created the design within a photo editing application, you can use this function to upload the design as an image. For optimal results, we recommend that your design is prepared to fit within the full size of the product (including the bleed area).

Alternatively, you can also use this tool to upload textures, elements or other media to use within your design. Always make sure that you have all the rights to use these elements within your design.

The maximum file size allowed is 10Mb and a maximum resolution of 4000 x 4000 pixels (minimum 72dpi)

The allowed image types are Jpeg, Png and SVG

Choose From Designs
You can find several ready-made design elements to use within your design; from Backgrounds to simple elements such as lines and arrows. All the designs are categorised by theme. To insert a design element or background, simply click on it.

All the silhouette designs can have colour applied to them.
All designs, including backgrounds, can be freely transformed and moved around in your design. You can read more about transform rules here.

Add Text
Click this icon to add a text layer. First, you need to add the text layer to your design before you are able to transform, change the font, colour and position of your text.

You can read in more detail about text personalisation here.

Free Drawing
This is exactly what the name suggests 🙂
By using this tool, you will be adding freehand drawings to your design.

You can use from 3 different ‘Brush Types’: Pencil, Circle and Spray in any colour you prefer. You can also adjust the line width from within the ‘Free Drawing’ panel.

There are a few additional tools available on the right-hand side of the Customisation Tool of the ‘Create Your Own Design’ products.

Reset Tool
This will reset the design to the original, default state – all changes will be lost.

Ruler Tool
This function will add a ruler to the left and top side of the design, to help you place elements better within your design. This is most useful when you want to place symmetrical items in your design.

Centre Snap
This tool allows you to snap your design perfectly in the middle of the item. When you’re dragging the element close to the centre, the element will be dragged to the middle automatically.

Save Function
This tool allows you to save a design for a later use. The design will be saved within the same product, under your username. You must be logged in to be able to save the design and access it at a later stage.

Load Function
This function is used to load a saved design. To load a saved design you need to be logged into the account that the design was saved to. Then, navigate to the product page for which the design was created and click the load button.

Guided Tour
As the names suggest, this function provides a quick guided tour of how the Customisation Tool works.
